Breve Presentación

Sergio Portal Núñez (Burgos, Spain, 1975), got his Bachelor in Sciences at University of Navarra (1997) and his Ph.D. at the same University (2003) defending his thesis “Development of peptide inhibitors of protease NS3a of Hepatitis C Virus” under the direction of Dr. Francisco Borrás and Dr. Marina García-Delgado. Then, he was granted with a postdoctoral fellowship from National Institute of Health, National Cancer Institute in Dr. Frank Cuttita´s laboratory. Here, he was studying the mechanism of angiogenesis produced by Adrenomedullin (a pro-oncogenic peptide) in tumoral environment and the interaction of this peptide with Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor in the carcinogenesis produced by cigarette smoking. Back in Spain (September, 2008), he joined the Laboratorio de Metabolismo Mineral y Óseo headed by Dr. Pedro Esbrit, a major expert in this field in Spain, at Instituto de Investigaciones Sanitarias-Fundación Jiménez Díaz-UAM (IIS-FJD) with a research contract granted by Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Envejecimiento y Fragilidad (RETICEF). In this position, he has been working in studying effect of the diabetes, glucocorticoids and ovarectomy in bone regeneration, characterization of cell actions of different parts of Parathormone Related Peptide (PTHrP) and the actions of GLP-1, exendine 4 and PTHrP in osteopenia produced by diabetes. Studying the effects of high glucose (HG) in bone has been part of the professional practice in the last recent years, describing the effects of HG over Wnt-pathway and authophagy process in bone. He has also been collaborating in the study of how PTHrP might alleviate the effects of insulin growth factor I deficiency. Some of these works are part of the doctoral thesis of Dr. Ana López-Herradón who was co-mentored by Dr. Portal-Núñez. In collaboration with other RETICEF´s groups, Dr Portal-Núñez has disclosured some of the effect of oxidative stress in bone regeneration and healing in premature and regular aging rodents with or without diabetes and used PTHrP fragments  (1-37, 107-139 or 107-111) as a possible therapeutic approach. Besides, he has been involved in characterization of new tools for bone regeneration using biomaterials conjugated with PTHrP peptides. As an intra-IIS-FJD collaboration, he worked with Dr. Nieves Gonzalez in exploring new approaches to diabetes treatment, such us the modulation of Bombesin Receptor subtype 3 expression and activity in this pathology. Regarding translation to industry of generated knowledge, Dr. Portal-Núñez (with other authors) applied for a patent: “Osteostatin use as a drug principle for osteoarthristis treatment” (P201531318). He has been part of the researcher team that has developed different projects leaded by Dr. Pedro Esbrit at IIS-FJD between 2009 to 2015. In January 2016, he joined to Dr. Raquel Largo´s group at Bone and joint unit research in Rheumatology department who was elected as the new group IP of RETICEF in IIS-FJD after retirement of Dr. Pedro Esbrit. Dr. Sergio Portal-Núñez has been granted by Fundación Española de Investigaciones Óseas y Metabolismo Mineral to carry out two projects as principal investigator. This professional trajectory is reflected in 39 publications that can be found in pubmed. In September 2017 he joined Ciencias Médicas Básicas Department Medicine School at CEU San Pablo University as assistant professor of histology and cell biology.
