Francesco Petrarch’s (1304-1374) writings were decisive in creating the historiographical concept of the Middle Ages and the derogatory consideration of these centuries in history, chiefly due to its idenfication with classical authors such as Ennius, Cicero and Livy. This article focuses on the historiographical concepts that Petrarch reveals in his poem written in hexameters entitled Africa, a work that has been insufficiently studied but which is key to understanding both the historiographical theses of the Tuscan poet and the creation of the concept of the Dark Ages.
