Breu Presentació

Dr. Almeida’s main research line consists of assessing the effects of invasive species (fishes and crayfishes) on native communitites, with particular emphasis on endemic and threatened fishes of the Iberian Peninsula. Specifically to assess the ecological interactions between native species and non-native fish, he has designed particular protocols to carry out direct observations in Iberian streams by means of snorkelling surveys. He has also conducted research on the effects of flow regulation on Mediterranean communities in Iberian streams, from benthic invertebrates to riverine mammals (e.g. otter). Dr. Almeida carried out small research projects while he was an undergraduate student from 2000 to 2002 at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM, Spain). He received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology (speciality: Zoology) from UCM in 2003. In 2004, he carried out a Minor Thesis on behavioural physiology at UCM. In 2008, he received his PhD on Conservation Biology with Dr. Europeus mention from UCM. From 2009 to 2011, he was working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM, Spain). From 2011 to 2012, he was working as an Environmental Assessor at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquactulture Science (CEFAS, UK). From 2012 to 2014, he was working as a Marie Curie Research Fellow at Bournemouth University (BU, UK). From April 2014 to July 2014, he was working as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Iberian Society of Ichthyology. From September 2014 to August 2016, he was working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Girona (UdG). Language skills: Spanish (native), English (advanced) and French (advanced). Dr. Almeida has teaching experience as Laboratory Assisstant for the subjects ‘Vertebrate Zoology’ and ‘Applied Ichthyology’ at UCM from 2005 to 2008; University Lecturer for the subject ‘Aquatic Ecology’ at UCLM from 2009 to 2011; he awarded his Certification as Associate Professor from the National Agency for Quality Evaluation and Certification (ANECA) in 2013; and he was University Lecturer for the Master on Environmental Impacts at the UdG in 2015. Moreover, he has supervised 2 Minor, 2 Doctoral and 7 MSc theses in Spain and the UK. Dr. Almeida has participated in 8 competitive and 6 non-competitive projects in Spain and the UK, acting as Principal Investigator (PI) in 4 of them. The candidate has publised 30 SCI papers (17 as the first author and 11 as the corresponding author). Some of these SCI papers have been published in prestigious journals such as ‘Science of the Total Environment’, ‘Biological Invasions’, ‘Animal Behaviour’ and ‘PlosOne’. He has also published 1 book, 1 book chapter, 1 newsletter, 2 reports and 1 non-SCI paper. Scientific meetings: 22 international and 14 national conferences, 7 of them as invited speaker. Dr. Almeida has acted as reviewer in 20 SCI journals and he was a member of the jury in 4 PhD Dissertations. The candidate has carried out Research Stays in France and the USA as a PhD student (3 months each) and the UK as a postdoctoral researcher (more than 3 years). The applicant awarded 1 undergraduate, 1 postgraduate, 1 predoctoral and 5 postdoctoral grants from universities, banks and research centres in Spain and the UK; plus 6 travel and 1 research grants from universities and scientific associations, respectively. Membership of the Iberian Society of Ichthyology and the Fisheries Society of the Bristish Isles.
