During my PhD in the University San Pablo CEU, I studied the pharmacological interaction between ?-opioid and ?2-adrenergic receptors in vitro and in vivo. The results obtained from this research led me to publish two first-author papers and to be co-author in several others (Polanco et al. 2014; Polanco et al, 2009; Salas et al, 2013; Gramaje et al 2010; Morales at al 2008; Alguacil et al 2008). I presented the most relevant results in national and international conferences (Society for Neuroscience Meeting, FENS Forum, EOC-ENC). To study further the molecular mechanisms underlying the pharmacological interaction between ?-opioid and ?2-adrenergic receptors, I moved to the lab of Prof Graeme Milligan, in the University of Glasgow. The main results obtained in this period were published in a peer-review journal (Polanco et al, 2011).  I started my Post-Doctoral research activity in the laboratory of Dr Pennuto in 2011. The lab of Neurodegenerative Diseases, leaded by Dr Pennuto, is focused on the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of motor neuron diseases. The principal aim is to develop novel potential therapeutic strategies for these incurable disorders, from basic to translational molecular neuroscience. In this lab, I started to study the pathogenetic mechanisms that cause Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (also called SBMA or Kennedy's disease). Mainly, my research has been focused in the role of PKA signaling in the pathogenesis of SBMA. I have found that the neuropeptide PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase polypeptide), acting through PKA pathway, has a neuroprotective role in SBMA. As PACAP is a highly inestable peptide, we developed a new PACAP analog which allow us to study the effects of the treatment in vivo. This new neuropeptide is now in process to be patented with the Telethon Foundation (Italy) and the Italian Institute of Technology.  During this period I have collaborated with other members of my lab, and the results have been published in peer-review journals (Aggarwal et al 2014; Scaramuzzino et al. 2015; Rusmini and Polanco et al, 2015; Polanco and Parodi et al, 2016). I have participated in national and international conferences (VI Meeting on the Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration, Cell Symposia Translational Neuroscience) and in the organization of the annual meeting of Kennedy's disease association (University of Trento, Italy).  I carried out a pharmacological study to test the efficacy of a new patented drug compound in the pathology of SBMA mice. The complete study, of 15 months duration, was performed in the Italian Institute of Technology and funded by the private company Siena Biotech (confidential results). I mentored four post-graduant students and two PhD students, I taught lessons of Industrial Pharmacy for FIR (farmaceùtico interno residente) students in the university San Pablo CEU and master lessons of Neurodegeneration in the University of Trento PhD school, Italy
