Breve Presentación

(updated 7/2022)

I am an autonomous young researcher passionate about developing  groundbreaking analytical techniques to  make possible new diagnostic techniques along with fundamental and clinical biomedical research. This determination has led me to publish  48 research papers and 5 book chapters, regularly present at  international conferences (also as an invited speaker),  mentor numerous students, and obtain  fellowships and grants.

After graduating in Pharmacy (2008), I started a PhD thesis funded by a  competitive FPU fellowship in the group Biologically Relevant Heterocycles, led by J. C. Menéndez and M. A. Martin at Universidad Complutense.  During my PhD, I published 14 papers (10 as the first author), and 1 book chapter. As a pharmacist with a strong biomedical vocation, I developed  analytical strategies to study the mechanisms of action of new topoisomerase I inhibitors, with  international collaborations resulting in 3 joint papers. After my PhD defense (2014, “ Premio extraordinario de doctorado”) I was  accredited by the ANECA and pursued a  research career abroad.

In 2015 I was selected through an  international call to work as a postdoc in a  technology transfer project funded by the Belgian bioanalytical company Analis at the  University of Geneva, Switzerland, joining the group of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry of Profs. J.-L. Veuthey and S. Rudaz. After my postdoc (2015-2017) I  obtained a research associate position (2018-present) funded by the Federal Swiss Centre for Human Applied Toxicology (SCAHT). This promotion allowed me to  start leading my own research lines. I found that  biomedical analyses using metabolomics are an exciting and new field offering plenty of possibilities for fundamental and applied research, and so I focused on  LC and CE coupled to MS to start my independent career in metabolomics. Within this framework, I have produced innovative solutions in metabolomics as new readouts for biomedical studies. Such readouts proved to be useful in the study of  neuroinflammation,  steroidogenesis inhibitors, and  semen quality assessment to study male sub- and  infertility.

I have participated in national and international symposia ( 26 oral presentations, co-author of 71 posters) where I have been recognized as an emergent leader in my area, being  invited by the editors to be the last author of  2 bookchapters published in 2022 by Springer Nature and Wiley. I was also invited as  a guest editor in a special issue of the Metabolites journal.

In all, I have published  48 JCR articles ( 18 as the first author,  7 as last, second-last or corresponding author, JCR/Google Scholar  h-index = 17/18, 45% Open Access),  cited +1050 times (according to Google Scholar, with  SciVal Field-Weighted Citation Impact=1.76,  15.9 citations/paper, >270 citations in 2021,  24% of papers among the top 10% most cited worldwide in the field) and  5 book chapters. Such metrics demonstrated my ability to publish in  leading journals and to obtain  high visibility in the Analytical Chemistry, Multidisciplinary and Biomedicine areas.

Concerning teaching and mentoring activities, I taught  laboratory and master courses in the Pharmacy, Biosciences, and Life Sciences programs, in Spanish, English, and French. Also, I have been  invited to  deliver four short courses and workshops at  international conferences and  doctoral schools. I have supervised or currently supervise  10+ undergrad students,  4 master theses, and  4 PhD theses, what motivated several students to continue successful research careers. I have participated in  teaching innovation initiatives.

In the past two years, I have raised 378000€ in funding. I have participated in  7 competitive research projects. I have secured funding for my research through collaborations with  private (Analis, Agilent) and  public (SCAHT) entities, the  University Hospitals of Geneva and Toulouse, and  international organizations (World Anti-Doping Agency). I have also developed  software tools for metabolomics licensed through the University of Geneva.

In addition to the management of my research projects and PhD students, I have also been responsible for  setting up and operating the P2 biosafety laboratory of my department, and I also  oversee and manage our park of mass spectrometry instruments. I have been a member of the  local organizing committee of an international conference (MSB 2020) and participated in several local and  international actions to raise awareness of the contribution of scientific research to our society.

Currently, I act as a  reviewer for international research calls (Agence National de la Recherche, France) and  leading journals in biomedical analysis and metabolomics. I have been a member of  several PhD follow-up committees, and a  PhD defense committee.

In all, I have demonstrated the  international,  mobility,  autonomy,  leadership,  mentorship,  communication,  collaboration, and  funding skills to continue my  independent research career as a  Talento fellow in Spain.
